Anime, gaming, and community are what bring fans to Youmacon in Detroit, but giving back is what brings it all together. Through our continued partnership with Extra Life, the Youmacon community has turned its passion for gaming, cosplay, and fandom into meaningful support for children and families across Michigan.
Extra Life is a nonprofit program of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals that unites gamers, creators, and communities to support local children’s hospitals. Every dollar raised stays local, helping children receive the care, comfort, and support they need during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
How the Youmacon Community Powered Extra Life
During Youmacon 2025, the community showed just how powerful fandom can be when people come together for a cause.
Through charity events, raffles, livestreams, and generous attendee donations, Youmacon helped raise $13,219.50 in direct cash donations, along with an additional $3,209 in non-cash contributions, including artwork and physical items donated for fundraising.
Beyond the convention weekend itself, Extra Life supporters continued their fundraising efforts throughout the year. Across all Extra Life fundraisers in 2025, the total amount raised reached $84,476.09, benefiting Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
These contributions help fund programs that provide comfort, support, and essential care for young patients and their families.
Real Impact Through Play
Funds raised through Youmacon’s Extra Life initiatives support Child Life Services, which help children cope with the emotional and psychological challenges of medical treatment.
For many young patients, being in a hospital environment can feel overwhelming and stressful. Child Life specialists use play-based programs and therapeutic tools to help children feel more comfortable and maintain a sense of normalcy during treatment.
Supporting Sensory-Friendly Care
Funds raised through Extra Life help provide resources such as:
- Calming lights
- Fidget tools
- Crash pads
- Sensory mats
These tools allow hospital teams to create environments that reduce stress and anxiety while supporting children who may need additional sensory-friendly accommodations.
For families navigating difficult medical situations, these programs can make a meaningful difference in how children experience care.
Gaming for a Cause
Gaming has always been at the heart of Youmacon, and initiatives like Extra Life show how gaming communities can make a meaningful impact beyond the convention floor.
Events like charity livestreams, tabletop sessions, and gaming marathons allow fans to turn their love of gaming into support for children’s hospitals. Through partnerships like Extra Life, gaming communities across the country continue to demonstrate how play can bring people together while raising funds for life-changing medical care.

Extra Life Game Day and Community Fundraising
The Youmacon and Extra Life communities also rallied around Extra Life Game Day, a 24-hour gaming marathon held each November.
Led by longtime Extra Life supporter Timmy, the event featured nonstop gaming, raffles, giveaways, community challenges, a charity auction, and interactive livestream fundraising.
Gamers, creators, and community members joined together online to support Child Life Services and raise additional awareness for the mission behind Extra Life.
A Community That Shows Up
From the Charity Ball to livestreams, panels, raffles, and spontaneous fundraising moments throughout the convention weekend, the Youmacon community once again proved that showing up means more than cosplay and convention badges.
Even as the convention wrapped up, attendees continued donating, pushing fundraising totals higher right up through the final hours.
Extra Life thrives because people choose to turn their passions into something meaningful. Whether through gaming marathons, tabletop sessions, auctions, or creative collaborations, every contribution helps make a difference.
